山形まなび館　MONO SCHOOL

久しぶりに日本での布ぞうりワークショップが下記の日程で開かれます。場所は山形まなび館。山形市の皆さんには、旧山形第一小学校とお伝えした方がわかりやすいかもしれませんね。ここは山形の伝統工芸を始めとする産業の紹介や、市民の文化交流場となるよう元の小学校をリノベーションし、2010年に再オープンしました。東京都世田谷区にあるものづくり学校や、千代田区の3331 Arts Chiyoda、京都の旧立誠小学校のように、市民とアートが一体となるオーガニックな場所を目指しています。帰国してから私も初めてその存在を知りました。地下1階にはギャラリースペース、一階のショップには山形の伝統工芸を今に生かしたプロダクツが並び、地元の農家さんが持ち寄った野菜等がお目見えするミニ市場を備えた穀雨カフェがあります。伝統ある小学校のカタチを上手に生かし、新しい命が吹き込まれているのを目にして、とてもワクワクしました。今後このような場所は、とても重要な役割を果たしていくと感じています。その山形まなび館、MONO SCHOOLで布ぞうりワークショップが出来る事を大変嬉しく思います。各回10名までと限りがございますので、ご都合の良い時間帯をお選び下さい。皆さんのご参加を心からお待ちしています。

• 参加料3000円 （1ドリンク付き）

+ 持ち物は特にありませんが、ご自宅で不要となった衣類やハギレ等の古布のお持込を歓迎します。その場合はコットンを中心とした素材がおススメ、2-3枚程お持ち下さい。(例：Tシャツ・Yシャツ、フェイスタオルは2-3枚程。バスタオル・シングルシーツは1枚。）

• Morning class 10:00-13:00 / Afternoon class 14:00-17:00
• Fee 3000 Yen (Includes 1drink from cafe)
• The class will be conducted bilingually if necessary  

+ Each class holds up to 10 seats only and you are welcome to bring your unwanted and old clothes/fabric from your closet. Preferably 2-3 pieces and cotton materials.

MONO SCHOOL is formerly known as The Yamagata 1st Elementary School which has been locating in the heart of the city since 1927 and it ended its role as an academic place in 2004. After a short while, the city renovated this historical and architecturally well-built place into MONO SCHOOL with a whole new concept to re-open its doors to public in 2010. Aiming to support the local industries and craftsmanship with various skill sharing workshops, events and exhibitions. Not only these occasions being said, but there are shops and the cafe that welcome visitors every day. The elementary school has now received another life for the organic interaction widely accessible and I’m happy to announce that my zori workshop will be held at MONO SCHOOL this summer.

Another photo set from a charity workshop I have done while I was in Melbourne is here to show you today. Since the tragic earthquake and the tsunami struck the northern east of Japan, there was one thing in my mind kept me thinking, ‘Is there anything that I can do?’

Being apart from the country made me feel more devastated and helpless since there seemed to be nothing I could physically do right away but with a help from some colleagues I was temporarily working with, this charity workshop was thrown to the staff and their friends in April. We gathered one evening at the room to enjoy sharing the skills for making these zori sandals and how sweet that one of us even brought onigiri, the rice balls and green tea muffins for our snack. Well, there is always something each of us can contribute! I thank all the participants gathered that night and the profit was donated to the relief fund through Consulate General of Japan in Melbourne.

My sister and her family live in Sendai area and she said to me one day that I should see how the city looks like now with my own eyes as there was no way she could describe it when I asked and I’m going to visit her in this week. It has been almost 2 weeks since I came back home and all the news seen on TV begin with the 3.11 report. Here I am back in Japan and the question still remains, ‘Is there anything that I can do?’

4月に行ったもう一つのワークショップから写真をアップロードしました。今回、東日本大震災が起こってから、「何か出来る事はないか？」と自問自答していました。以前のブログ記事で書いたかもしれませんが、国から離れている限り、実際に現地へ出向く事はなかなか出来ません。それが私をとてもはがゆい気持ちにさせていました。ですが、当時お世話になっていたお仕事先の方と色々お話をさせて頂き、募金という形で少しでもその助けになるのなら、とチャリティワークショップを開きました。おにぎりや抹茶マフィンの差し入れもあり、おいしく頂きました。私達に出来る事はやはりあるものです！当日の収益は、在メルボルン日本領事館を通して、復興へ向けた義援金とさせて頂きました。ご参加下さいました皆様、ありがとうございました。

私の姉とその家族は仙台に住んでいます。この度の地震について街の様子を聞いた時、「言葉では説明出来ない。一度この状況を自分の目で見て欲しい。」と言われました。今、帰国してから約2週間が経とうとしていますが、毎日のニュースは必ず地震と津波関連から始まります。海外ではメディアを通す事でしかその姿を見る事が出来ませんでしたが、今週出向く予定にしており、この目で見てきたいと思います。そして、今度は何が出来るか、また私は考えています。

Visiting the sister city, Swan Hill in Victoria

Swan Hill locates on the northern edge of Victoria and New South Wales along the Murray river in Australia and has been the sister city of my hometown Yamagata, Japan. The youth exchange between these two cities originally began in 1980 and since then, they have been building a strong relationship over the last 30 years. Although I didn’t have a chance to visit Swan Hill when I was in the junior high school, a visit to Swan Hill always sat in my to-do list. Luckily, I met Mr Sawatari, a chairman of the Swan Hill Club in Yamagata before I left the country last year and Ms Stynes in Melbourne, both have been dedicating their tremendous efforts into the sister city program. Later in April, I have contacted Mr Blackman, who gladly invited me over to Swan Hill for my workshop in the middle of May.

Along the 4-hour drive from Melbourne, I was astonished by its beautiful sceneries with sheep and cows out of the car window and I was very excited that I have had this 1-day trip to Swan Hill.

As soon as we pulled our car off the street in Swan Hill, we started wandering the city a little bit with our quick lunch before the workshop. It didn’t take me much time that I was caught by its peacefulness and that’s perhaps something we have in common between Swan Hill and Yamagata.

As you can see in the photos, the 3-hour workshop was successfully finished and we all enjoyed sharing the history about both cities. My appreciation goes to Mr Blackman and friends who participated to the workshop in spite of a short notice this time. I can’t be any happier that my workshop has come this far to perform and certainly hope that we continue to interact as sister cities over the youth and cultural exchange with many significant events for our future.

It is also my great pleasure to announce that a part of the profits from the workshop will be kindly donated to Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief. Thank you very much.

スワンヒルはオーストラリアのビクトリア州北部に位置し、マレー川を挟んだ目の前はニューサウスウェールズ州。スワンヒルは、私が生まれ育った山形市と姉妹都市を結んでいます。1980年に始まった青少年国際交流をきっかけに、以降30年以上も双方の市民が広く行き来し交流を持つ等、その親交を深めて来ました。日本を出発する前に山形市スワンヒルクラブを先導する澤渡氏とお会いする機会を得て、ご紹介頂いたメルボルン在住のYoshiko氏と顔を合わせる事が出来ました。お二人ともスワンヒルと山形市の姉妹都市交流に欠かす事の出来ない重要な役割を担い、並々ならぬ努力と貢献をして下さっております。私自身、中学生の頃にスワンヒルへ訪れる事はありませんでしたが、メルボルンにいる時に是非足を運んでみたいと思っていました。帰国も控えた5月、皆様のご紹介とご縁から、この度スワンヒルでぞうりのワークショップを開く事が出来ました。

メルボルンから車で約4時間。車窓にら眺める壮大な景色の中には、ひつじや牛などの動物もおり、私を楽しませてくれました。スワンヒルに到着後はランチと共に街を探索、その穏やかで和んだ空気が山形市と共通しているのかもしれない、と感じました。

スワンヒル側で交流の要を担って下さっているブラックマンさん始め、ご友人の方々がワークショップに参加、あっという間に時間が過ぎて行きました。スワンヒルの歴史をお伺いしたり、楽しい話で盛り上がったのは言うまでもありません。ご参加下さいましてありがとうございました。長い歴史を持つスワンヒルと山形市の交流。これからもより一層の青少年や文化交流、草の根交流でお互いのよりよき発展を祈っております。

この度のワークショップで頂きました参加費の一部は、東日本大震災への義援金として役立たせて頂きました。スワンヒルの方々の温かいお気持ちに感謝致します。
